Giving through your payroll
Payroll Giving is an easy and tax-effective way for you to make regular donations to the MS Trust directly from your pay or company/personal pension, providing you pay tax through PAYE (Pay As You Earn).
Payments are deducted before tax, so a donation of £10 only costs you £8 if you pay basic rate tax, or just £6 if you pay the higher rate. This also means that your taxable income is reduced.
Benefits of giving through your payroll
- Payroll Giving is flexible, tax-effective and easy to opt in and out of. You can choose the frequency and amount of your donations.
- You can give anonymously if you wish so that your details are not passed to the charity. Your employer won't know which charity you choose to support.
- You don't have to remember to give - regular gifts will be sent automatically to the MS Trust for as long as you choose.
- Your company may run a scheme where they match your charitable donations, meaning your donation is worth even more to the MS Trust.
Benefits for employers and pension providers
- It's quick and easy to set up and run - just sign up with an HMRC approved Payroll Giving Agency and they will administer the donations.
- All modern payroll systems can be set up to handle Payroll Giving, there are no extra tax forms to fill in and record keeping is straightforward.
- It's a way to show commitment to causes that your staff care about, helping you to build good relations with your employees.
- If your company chooses to match donations or meet the Payroll Giving Agency's admin costs, this can be offset against tax as a charitable donation.
- By running regular promotions about your Payroll Giving scheme to maintain awareness and continuing to recruit new donors, your company could be eligible for a Payroll Giving award.
How do I start giving?
Providing that your employer already offers Payroll Giving, it's very simple to start giving. You'll just need to complete a form, which is usually obtained from your Payroll Department or Personnel. Donations will be deducted from your payroll and distributed to your chosen charity.
Setting up Payroll Giving in your workplace
If your company does not have a Payroll Giving scheme in place, you will need to encourage them to set one up. It is very straightforward for an employer to organise this, they just need to sign up with a Payroll Giving Agency (click the links below to find out more) who will administer the donations.
- Speak to your employer about donating via your payroll. If you would like any further information, please email the MS Trust's fundraising team or ring us on 01462 476700.
