A to Z of MS Speech problems
Speech disorders can arise as a symptom of multiple sclerosis for some people. Typical MS speech disorders include slurring of speech due to weakness or lack of coordination in the muscles used in speech (dysarthria), swallowing difficulties (dysphagia), and problems with remembering specific words (dysphasia).
For most people, speech disorders only become apparent in the later stages of the condition although they may develop at any stage.
Treatment of speech disorders in MS often involves a speech and language therapist. If the problem is very mild, traditional speech exercises may be effective. More complex problems may also benefit from the use of communication aids and equipment.
